Greg Harwood Interview

Greg Harwood, music composer for the porcelain film ‘breathe’ talks to the interviewer Clarence Van Bronken about his music…

CVB says:

So Greg how have your experiences on breathe differed to the previous collaborations you’ve had with nicholas on other films?

greg says:

well, we were alot more organised this time and really took the time to develop each theme relative to its use throughout the film. We also played around with ideas until we had a set palette of sounds to use - for continuity’s sake, which hasnt been so important in the past when we just doing shorts

CVB says:

what are your thoughts on the finished pieces?

greg says:

yeah, im really pleased. The addition of a solo cello for ‘bailey’s theme’ really ‘breathed’ a bit of life into the entirely synth score - if you’ll excuse the pun

CVB says:

which track is your favourite?

greg says:

probably the cue for the car boot scene. It doesnt have a particularly prominent theme, but i feel it really works with the scene - in the sense that the music ebbs and flows with the comic dialogue between ricci and zara. It’s also an important scene to get right because as its where they first meet, so im pleased with the overall result when you watch it back.

CVB says:

did you have any pre-concieved ideas on what you thought the music should be like before you saw the cut?

greg says:

of that particular scene or the film as a whole?

CVB says:

film as a whole…

greg says:

well, nicholas and i spent a lot of time in the ‘concept’ stage discussing various styles and referring to pre-existing scores. I was able to bounce different ideas off nicholas based on the script - some of which we stuck with by the time the cut was ready. Having said that, most of the themes we eventually decided on were developed once i had seen the cut - mainly due to the pacing of the film.

CVB says:

on a different ‘note’ is ‘this’ the new ‘that’?

greg says:

i dont think you can choose between them. while ‘this’ can often have the capacity to amaze, ‘that’ has been responsible for such awful filth in the past, i think we’re better of without both of them.

CVB says:

Who do you admire as a film composer?

greg says:

well, anyone who can give a scene gravitas through their music, but I think every film composer has good and bad points in how they interpret scenes. in terms of music, i like to listen to newer composers such as thomas newman, alexandre desplat and jo hisaishi as they bring a strong sense of their own musical identity to a score, when often film music can be quite stale.

CVB says:

and finally, what’s in store for you in the future?

greg says:

well in terms of work im currently scoring a comedy short and in a few weeks time ill begin work on another feature-length film. However, im really hoping that all of our hard work and sleepless nights owrking on Breathe will pay off and that the success of the film can be a foundation on which Porcelain Films can build!

CVB says:

ooh and one more thing, are you secretly nicks younger brother?

greg says:

well we both have eyes that sort of slope downwards at the sides, but yeah, cut a long story short, i am (not) nick’s brother

CVB says:

ok, thanks for that…
